L-STAR

(L-STAR) is a national fundraising initiative that runs in conjunction with law school on-campus interviewing (OCI) programs. If a law student stays with family or friends instead of in a hotel during a callback interview, the interviewing law firm(s) agrees to donate $215 to that student's public interest funding organization.

Thank You Professor Hirshon

SFF Recognizes Generous Contribution of Professor Robert J. Hirshon

Roopal R. Shah, '95

In 2010, Student Funded Fellowships was the grateful recipient of $12,500 of matching funds from Professor Robert J. Hirshon, former President of the American Bar Association, and the Wein Hirshon Charitable Foundation. In collaboration with Dean Evan Caminker, Professor Hirshon sought a creative way to leverage his gift to generate even more money for SFF, and the Dean’s Challenge was born.

The Dean’s Challenge attached a matching amount to several of the SFF Auction’s most popular and exciting items. If a Dean’s Challenge item met or exceeded the matching amount, Professor Hirshon made a matching donation in the amount of the bid on the item.

The incentive of the Dean’s Challenge and Professor Hirshon’s generosity added to the success of several of SFF’s most popular Auction items. Zingerman’s classic donation -- creating and naming a new sandwich in cooperation with the Zingerman’s Deli staff -- sold for $1500, compared with a maximum of $1300 in previous years. Skydiving with Professor Mathias Reimann, which had netted $800 in multiple consecutive years, brought in $1100 in 2010. These amounts and others were matched by the Dean’s Challenge donation. The Dean’s Challenge was integral to the success of the 2010 auction, our second-highest grossing ever, eventually leading to a net gain to SFF in $15,200.

SFF is pleased to announce that Professor Hirshon and the Wein Hirshon Charitable Foundation have again committed their support to the 2011 Auction. We expect that the Dean’s Challenge will continue to be a success, and we are exploring new ways that Professor Hirshon’s generosity can contribute to the success of SFF and create new opportunities for our SFF grantees.
