The SFF Auction

Each spring, Student Funded Fellowships hosts a high-profile auction in Ann Arbor to raise money for SFF grants. This annual auction - where students, faculty, and alumni bid on donated items in both a live and silent auction format - is consistently the largest single fundraiser for SFF. The 2006 auction was the most successful auction in SFF's history, raising nearly $70,000. The 2007 auction was also highly successful, raising over $55,000.

To ensure the continued success of this critical fundraiser, SFF relies on the donation of exciting auction items to keep the bidding high. Recent items include a "City Slickers" horseback riding adventure in Nebraska, vacations in Palm Springs and the mountains of West Virginia, autographed sports memorabilia and tickets, lunch with Richard Epstein and Ben Stein, a private Supreme Court tour, and skydiving with a Michigan Law Professor.

Michigan Law students provide leadership support for their fellow students through contributions to SFF and, in so doing, help foster the sense of community that makes the Law School such a special place to begin a legal career.

The SFF Auction brings the entire law school together to support and encourage students in public interest work. The high-spirited event -- the most widely attended on the law school calendar -- offers an exciting atmosphere and generates tens of thousands of dollars each year.

SFF's promotion of community spirit goes beyond the walls of the Law School. Local and national businesses help to support students working in the public interest by making donations to SFF. Law firms of all sizes throughout the US contribute to the Auction and the L-STAR program. Alumni and UM Law professors support SFF in various ways that have even included one professor's sacrifice of his hair for the sake of a sure-fundraiser amongst his 1L class.

Many people donate their time, resources, and expertise to help make SFF a continuing success. The Office of Career Services and Office of Public Service dedicate an astonishing amount of energy to aid SFF's fundraising efforts. Students applying for an SFF grant also volunteer to help with SFF events. Finally, SFF's pledge drive allows law firm-bound students an opportunity to dedicate a portion of their first-year or summer salaries toward the following year's SFF grant fund.
