Michigan Journal of International Law

Dear First-Year Students,

Towards the end of winter semester you will have the opportunity to commit to one of the most meaningful and prestigious activities available to you in law school. Being a part of a journal affords you the chance to master the invaluable art of legal citation and involve yourself in a vibrant intellectual community. As you decide whether to join a journal, we at the Michigan Journal of International Law (MJIL) encourage you to join us in publishing one of the most cutting-edge journals of international legal scholarship.

MJIL is ranked among the most reputable international law journals in the world. We present articles by leading academics and practitioners in the field, covering the full spectrum of international issues. Our resources are enviably vast, as Michigan boasts a preeminent international law program. Over the years, we have developed a stellar reputation within the law school community as well. According to the 2005/2006 BCG Attorney Search Guide to Class Ranking Distinctions and Law Review Admission at America’s Top 50 Law Schools, “After Law Review, [MJIL] is generally considered the best journal on which students can work.” While MJIL receives accolades on account of the quality of its scholarship, we prize the fact that the Journal encourages members to bond outside the publication process by sponsoring social gatherings. The balance between working hard and playing hard is something that many of our members cherish most.

As globalization continues at break-neck speed, attorneys regularly become enmeshed in legal matters with international implications. Apprising yourself of developments in this field with MJIL can help prepare you for your legal career. Journal members also have the opportunity to publish their own note in MJIL. Even if you do not intend to practice or teach international law, the broad range of legal editing skills you will acquire through MJIL will sharpen the skills necessary for any legal endeavor.

Keep an eye out for posters and emails during winter semester inviting you to meet the staff and apply to MJIL. Regardless of whether it is an experience abroad or a general academic curiosity that piques your interest in international law, we would love to have you as a member of our team.

With warmest regards,
