February 2014
February 19 - 12:00pm-1:00pm, SH 0225 - Jessica Litman on ABC (et al.) v. Aereo
A discussion of ABC v. Aereo, a case recently taken up by the Supreme Court to examine the issue of retransmission rights in local television broadcasts, with primary commentary provided by Professor Jessica Litman. This talk is intended for students interested in intellectual property law, broadcast rights, copyrights, technology, and the legal strictures governing our ability to sit back and watch some TV.

September 24 - 11:45am-1:00pm, Hutchins 100 - Apple v. Samsung presented by Mr. McElhinny of Morrison Foerster
Please join the Intellectual Property Students Association for a lunch talk on the modern patent wars with Harold McElhinny. Among many other engagements, Mr. McElhinny served as the lead counsel for Apple in the company's recent patent litigation against Samsung. Mr. McElhinny is the former Managing Partner of Morrison Foerster, former Chair of the firm's Litigation Department, and former Co-Chair of the firm's Intellectual Property practice. Mr. McElhinny's practice includes complex IP cases involving electronics and life sciences technologies.
A non-pizza lunch will be served.

IPSA is hosting David Callahan, a partner in the Chicago office of Kirkland & Ellis, for a discussion on how the America Invents Act (AIA) will affect patent litigation.

September 13 - America's First Patents: A Discussion with Professor Michael Risch
Professor Michael Risch of Villanova School of Law will discuss American's first patents and the history of patent law as a whole. Michigan Law's Professor Rebecca Eisenberg will offer her own comments on Professor's Risch's presentation.

September 19 - General Body Meeting/Elections
Join IPSA for the first general body meeting of the year. New 1L reps will be elected.

September 20 - Pro Bono Talk
Learn about pro bono opportunies offered through IPSA

September 27 - Social Hour at Dominick's
Unwind with IPSA at Dominick's before the weather turns too cold. Appetizers and drinks will be served.

October 2 - A Day In The Life of Intellectual Property Law
A lunchtime panel featuring a number of practicing attorneys practicing a range of IP law, including copyright, trademarks, patent prosecution, and patent litigation. Learn about their day-to-day experience. Lunch will be provided.

November 9 - Public Patent Foundation: Organic Seed v. Monsanto
Dan Rvicher, Executive Director of PUBPAT and counsel to plaintiffs in Organic Seed v. Monsanto, will discuss the lawsuit.

Symposium consisting of three panels composed of legal scholars and practitioners. Each panel will survey the current IP trends in several key industries across Asia. The panels are tentatively structure as follows: Fashion and the Arts, Public Health, and Electronics and Information Technology. Speakers TBA.

Alfred Perry, VP of Worldwide Content Protection and outreach at Paramount Pictures, will discuss SOPA, PIPA, and ways to address the issue of content theft.

Speaker Andrew Basile graduated from Princeton in 1986 and University of Michigan Law School in 1989 and worked at Jenner & Block in Chicago for five years. He went on to become an equity partner at Cooley Godward, running that firms 18-attorney Internet practice in San Francisco during the dot-com boom. He is now Chairman of Young Basile, a 25 attorney IP boutique with offices in Michigan and California. Mr. Basile will share his experiences about how to succeed in the IP law field.

Mark Dighton, Director of Law School Relations as well as Director of the Patent Bar Review Course at the Practising Law Institute, will speak about changes to the Patent Bar and other developments.

What do the polio vaccine, the EKG, and the modern football helmet have in common? They were all invented at the University of Michigan! To learn more about how technology developed at Michigan is transferred to the marketplace, please attend the IPSA Tech Transfer meeting. Rick Brandon and Bryce Pilz, Michigan Law alumni and Assistant General Counsel in the Office of Technology Transfer, will discuss how IP issues arising from the research conducted at the University are handled and how their career paths led them back to Michigan. All are welcome and lunch will be served!
