Invitation to Participate in the Michigan Law Green OCI Program:

Dear recruiting officer:

The Michigan Environmental Law Society would like to invite your firm to participate in the Green OCI program, where firms can make the interview process carbon neutral. In other words, participating firms purchase renewable energy green tags or carbon offsets to make up for the carbon dioxide emissions associated with air travel during the interview process at Michigan.

We believe this is an important step in beginning to fight global warming. We also believe it may serve as a nice recruiting and retention tool for firms, companies like Royal Dutch Shell use their emissions-reduction programs mainly to send an internal message to their employees about their corporate values. That said, certain clients, such as multinational companies that face Kyoto regulations or groups for whom social responsibility is important, may appreciate your firms participation in the program.

To participate in Green OCI, your firm only has to offset the emissions from the Michigan interview process (both recruiter and student flights) not all of the firms interviews. Click here for a fuller explanation of how carbon offsets work. Offsets should cost $100-200 per firm per year for the largest firms. However, we hope that once your firm sees how simple and inexpensive it is to buy offsets, you will buy them for not only all of your interview travel, but for all of your firms travel and operations.

To participate, click here. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact Mark at mlvs@umich.edu.

Sincerely,

Mark Shahinian, Green OCI Coordinator
