APALSA members, feel free to borrow books from the library in the APALSA office, but remember to sign out the book. Those members who borrowed a book from last semester, please return the books for use by other members this semester!  We have a lot of books available for various courses.  Most of them were donated by your fellow APALSA members, so please take good care of them!

1L REP CANDIDATE STATEMENTS

Elizabeth Mundee-Barket

Hi, my name is Liz Mundee-Barket and I'm running for 1L rep. After attending APALSA events, joining the external action committee and having great conversations with other members over extremely tasty free Asian food (THANK YOU. SERIOUSLY.), I feel strongly about getting more involved with the club.

In terms of prior leadership positions, I've served as an executive board member for UNC's moot court team and as a captain for the mock trial team. My duties involved logistical planning type things—making travel arrangements, reserving rooms, planning meetings—liaising with school administrators, and teaching new recruits how to write and deliver oral arguments. I know APALSA has a lot of big events coming up; my experience in organizing and generally taking care of all the details that make a large project run smoothly would be an asset. Besides, if I can get college freshman excited about the commerce clause, I can definitely get other 1L's excited about something as apparently awesome as APALSA :) !

I would love to represent APALSA; I'm confident I can create greater awareness of the club in general as well as the manifold cultures and rich histories that APALSA encompasses. I hope you'll vote for me, and thanks for your consideration!

Dang Duong

I'm Dang Duong, and I’m very excited to be a part of APALSA. I initially perceived APALSA as just another ethnic society, formed by Asians and for Asians. But I realized that was a huge mistake when I saw multiplicity of ethnicities and perspectives that comprise the APALSA membership. I couldn’t have found a better society to be a part of because I’ve always believed in breaking down all cultural and ethnic barriers regardless of the difficulties. While I’m ardently proud of the rich cultural heritage of my Vietnamese forefathers, I firmly believe in reaching out to share the values of the greater Asian societies among the entire student body. Everyone has much to gain when we set aside our divisions in an honest effort to understand and develop mutual respect for one another. If given the chance to be your 1L rep, I will continue to spread the inclusive message of APALSA as wide as possible, for it is through the lens of the Asian heritage that APALSA strives to build and promote a truly multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, and multi-perspective organization.

Helen Ji

Hi APALSA! My name is Helen Ji and I would really love to be your 1L rep. Since I arrived in Ann Arbor a few short weeks ago, I have gone to a ton of student group meetings (yay free food!), but APALSA has definitely stood out to me as the best organization here. It offers test banks, outlines, great food, and awesome people! As your 1L rep, I would be devoted to making APALSA a great experience for you. I think that law school should be as much fun as possible (meaning we still get jobs afterward), and I believe that APALSA and I can really make that happen for you. I look forward to getting to know all of you and helping the rest of the E-board plan fun and meaningful events for the upcoming year, regardless of any title. Thank you!

Jyoti Kuvelker

I am running for 1L Representative to get involved with a smaller community of students. I specifically chose APALSA because APALSA has pledged to maintain the collegial and friendly atmosphere that attracted me to Michigan Law. I am a proponent of having a school-life balance while in law school and I think Asian culture provides interesting opportunities for social events to lighten the stress of school.

I am a great choice for 1L rep because I am excited to support APALSA’s mission to be an academic and social resource. I enjoy coming up with creative event ideas and have experience organizing events as a corporate recruiting lead and as Vice President of my undergraduate Greek organization. I am particularly interested in helping with the activities APALSA holds to celebrate holidays while students are away from home and to recruit new law students. As a Phid House resident I can also contribute use of the Phid House for events.

Mimi Yang

I’m Mimi Yang and I hope to be your 1L APALSA Representative this year. I graduated from the University of Chicago with a dual degree in English Literature and Philosophy in 2009. For the last two years, I’ve been teaching high school English in New Orleans through Teach For America. I have really enjoyed getting to know all the1Ls (and 2Ls/3Ls!) at Michigan; I look forward to continuing to do so if elected as your representative. So why me? Well, first, there’s my experience as my dorm’s social chair, during which time I became very experienced in organizing delicious weekly study breaks (s'mores! cupcakes! nachos!) and events for larger groups (apple picking, skating, opera), a skill I hope to bring to my 1L rep event this semester or next.

More importantly, during my time as a teacher, I worked with folks of all stripes with whom I had to arrange school events, plan lessons, and maintain administrative duties. I respect diverse viewpoints and I will certainly strive not only to listen and recognize your concerns and desires, but also to bring them to the executive board. I think it is important that 1Ls become integrated into law school APALSA community quickly and I am dedicated to making that happen.
