Since its founding in 2005 as the UM China Law Society, the ALS has kept as its core mission the exchange of legal knowledge across vast boundaries, and a bridging of academic and legal knowledge to gain a unique perspective on the region. Introduction to the Luce Scholars Program

Helena Kolenda, the Program Director for the Luce Scholars Program- Asia, will discuss the Luce Scholars Program, a nationally competitive fellowship program.  It was launched by the Henry Luce Foundation in 1974 to enhance the understanding of Asia among potential leaders in american society.  The program provides stipends, langauge training and individualized professional placement in Asia for 15-18 Luce Scholars each years, and welcomes applications from students in a wide variety of fields who have had limited exposure to Asia.  Those who already have significant experience in Asia or Asian studies are not eligible.

Japan: Sugar, Sex and Magik

Mark D. West, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and the Nippon Life Professor of Law, is the director of the Japanese Legal Studies Program at the Law School. His current research focuses on love, sex, and marriage in Japanese case law, and on comparative fraud and con artistry. Professor West is the author of Law in Everyday Japan: Sex, Sumo, Suicide, and Statutes (2005), Secrets, Sex, and Spectacle: The Rules of Scandal in Japan and the United States (2006), and editor of The Japanese Legal System: Cases, Codes, and Commentary (2006).
