American Constitution Society

The American Constitution Society for Law and Policy is a national organization of law students, law professors, practicing lawyers and others dedicated to promoting an understanding of the United States Constitution that takes into account the principles of Compassion, Justice and Respect for Human Dignity.

The United States Constitution and its Amendments form a charter of liberty - a blueprint for a noble and unique experiment designed to prevent the excesses of power which prevent individuals from realizing their full potential. The Constitution, however, must be understood in light of liberty and justice if all Americans are to have a meaningful chance at succeeding in the pursuit of happiness. Because those who influence the law need to have a greater concern for the way it affects the lives of the people of this nation, the ACS believes these fundamental principles should form the starting point for enacting, interpreting and enforcing the law.

The American Constitution Society – Michigan Chapter seeks to influence debate on the law by advancing a progressive interpretation of the Constitution through forums, speakers and debate. By reintroducing the values of compassion, justice and respect for human dignity into the debate about the role of law in the America, the ACS hopes to build a stronger and more decent national community and bring the United States closer to its founding principles.
